Industrial Services
WORK INJURIES ARE COSTLY. How can they be stopped?
Sprains and strains, most often involving the back, account for 43 percent of injuries and illnesses resulting in days away from work.
Back injuries are the most frequent and most expensive disabling work injury. Independently, they cost employers more than $900 million in direct medical costs and $3.6 billion in wage compensation. Upper extremity injuries, which include carpal tunnel syndrome, have dramatically increased in frequency over the past few years and now comprise one-half of the total number of work related illnesses reported.
The answer to this growing problem is not modernization but prevention.
WE CAN HELP
Preventing industrial injuries is not simple. An effective prevention program requires specific and comprehensive training.
The industrial world has undergone tremendous changes in the last decade. Qualified medical professionals have become an integral part of this mainstream, offering industrial medicine programs that ensure successful employer/employee performance.
At the core of all industrial medicine programs is the physical therapist and the worker. The therapist's role is to evaluate the worker's physical movement at maximum objective strength without risk of injury.
The most effective method is based on a functional approach. This approach allows the therapist to match the worker's abilities with the physical job requirements. Functional testing also assists in compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).
The physical therapists at Orthopedics Plus Physical Therapy, Inc. have looked to WorkWell's Isernhagen Work Systems of Aliso Viejo, California to find ways that will help reduce injuries in the workplace. IWS serves as our consultant and we are trained to use their techniques on your job site with your employees and job applicants.
THE TOTAL PROGRAM
Reducing the occurrence, severity and high cost of work injury depends upon a continuum of care. We have found that a full spectrum of services designed to evaluate the worker, the work and the workplace can provide solutions to the ever-changing problems employers face each day. Our services include:
- Acute Care of Injured Worker
- Treatment is most effective when initiated as quickly as possible following the injury.
- Pre-work Screening
- Functional testing of a potential worker to see if he/she is capable of meeting the critical demands of the job.
- Functional Job Description
- Precise, written information providing job objectives, essential job functions, equipment used to perform the job, significant worksite measurements, critical demands of the job, nonessential job functions and possible job modifications and/or accommodations.
- Ergonomics
- Our worksite analysis will evaluate worker physical patterns, incidence of work injuries, productivity requirements, repetitive strain principles and manual handling risks. We also offer cost-effective alternatives and specific outcomes.
- Functional Job Analysis
- On-site evaluation in which issues are identified for ergonomic intervention, injury prevention education, worksite redesign and development of job rotation. A comprehensive job description can be written from the analysis that will promote compliance with the Americans With Disabilities Act (ADA) guidelines.
- Work Conditioning/ Work Hardening
- A highly structured, goal-oriented individualized treatment program will be designed to assist the worker in an expedient return to work. Components of the program include strengthening, conditioning, education and simulated work tasks. Consultation on the ADA as it relates to employers is also available. You may choose a singular component or multiple components from the services listed above. We will gladly work with you to design an approach that best fits your present needs and budget.
- Functional Capacity Evaluation
- A standardized test that comprehensively and objectively measures an individual's abilities in work related tasks. The end result of this evaluation provides the overall physical function of an individual and how this function relates to his/her previous job description. Job modifications are submitted in the recommendations.
WHO NEEDS IT?
Business owners, Administrators, Plant Safety Directors - anyone interested in promoting safe workers and providing safe work practices - can benefit from this prevention program. If implementing OSHA, NIOSH, EEOC, or ADA guidelines is your challenge, remember Orthopedics Plus Physical Therapy can help.
